President Trump met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday at the White House. The meeting took place in the oval office, where Trump made all the attendees watch a video showing dangerous treatment of White farmers.
Many say South Africa needs the United States more than ever, with an ongoing economic decline and unemployment soaring. The South African president likely met with Trump to get reassurances from the White House that his country could continue to rely on the United States as a trading partner.
But Trump didn’t seem ready to make nice, it appeared he wasn’t in the mood to talk tariffs or trade. Instead, Trump was focused on his concerns about the treatment of white farmers under the South African leader, and rightfully so. There’s plenty of evidence showing that white farmers are being targeted and harmed, and their land being taken.
During the visit to the White House the South African President was able to present framework for a trade deal, and the two sides agreed to hold further discussions to possibly iron out an agreement at a later time.
