Al Sharpton and a group of civil rights leaders have announced a new March on Washington to “fight for voting rights.” The event is set to take place on Friday, August 28, on the anniversary of the famous civil rights march of 1963.
The march comes a few months after a Supreme Court ruling told states they can almost never consider race when they draw maps to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
In the 6-3 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority agreed with Republicans that using race as the main factor in drawing congressional districts is unconstitutional. The court ruled that Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District, represented by a Democrat, relied too heavily on race.
The upcoming march will be led by Al Sharpton who essentially stated the recent court decision by Republicans has taken away voting protection for black Americans.
In reality, the recent court ruling is meant to take away the ability of states to use race as the main factor in drawing election districts. Supporters of the ruling argue that the ruling promotes an approach that treats all voters equally without discrimination or preference based on race.
