The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Friday that Trump does not have the authority to impose sweeping tariffs under a specific emergency power. The law Trump was using to exercise that authority was the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEPPA), it allows the President to declare national emergencies and take broad actions to prohibit international economic transactions, including freezing assets and imposing tariffs.

Trump responded to the ruling during a White House press briefing Friday afternoon. “We have alternatives. Great alternatives. Could be more money. We’ll take in more money, and we’ll be a lot stronger for it. We’re taking in hundreds of billions of dollars. We’ll continue to do so.”

Trump called the ruling “deeply disappointing,” and said he was “ashamed” of certain members of the court.

“I’m ashamed of certain members of the court, absolutely ashamed, for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country,” he said, calling those who voted against his policy “a disgrace.”

“It’s my opinion that the court has been swayed by foreign interests and a political movement that is far smaller than people would ever think.”

Trump then announced he will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff over and above the normal tariffs already being charged.
